HISTORY : Languedoc Farmers first setteld here seven thousand years ago. PLACES OF INTEREST : You will be fascinated by this centuriesold village overlooking the famous Canal du Midi. On a hill, surrounded by vineyards, the village was originally built around its 12thC church : numerous buildings in basalt from the ancient Roque Haute volcano, a restored well and typical winefarming houses. Typically Languedoc, its interes-ting historic Occitan heritage create a superb, relaxed environment and way of life!  ACTIVITIES : Two miles from the old village, Portiragnes-Plage seaside resort was build in the 1980's, and has since been attractively integrated into the local scenery. It is ideal for family holidays, with long, gentlysloping, fine sandy beaches, and a perfect climate with endless hours of sunshine. In addition to the superb bathing and sunbathing there are numerous other sports and activities: free variety shows and dances, volleyball contests on the beach, horse-riding, mountain biking, miniature golf, sailing school, roller-blade classes... Take the cycle track along the banks of the Canal du Midi to Béziers. Three well signposted walks from Portiragnes-Village and Portiragnes-Plage will take you exploring the fascinating flora and fauna of the Mediterranean coast and to a truly outstanding site : the Roque haute Nature Reserve (recognised in 1975) with its most unusual scenery due to the basaltic (volcanic) soil. FESTIVALS / EVENTS :  On the village :- 5 th May, Concert "Les Choralies du Ciel", - 12th and 13th, Exhibition by professional and amateur artists. - 2nd to 4th June, Football Challenge, - 10th June, Canal du Midi Triathlon, - 19th June, Music Festival, - 25th June to 1st July, numerous sporting and cultural events, - 20th to 22nd July, Feria : Bullfighting, - 3rd to 6th August, Local Feast, - October, the New Wine Fair.  On the beach :Local festivities are organised throughout the season : openair dancing, varieties shows, ask at the Tourist Office. - From 15 June to 15 September, Regional Art Craft Trades Exhibition at the Tourist Office, open from 7 pm to midnight every Tuesday to Sunday. - July and August : a craft market every Tuesday and Sunday from 8 pm till midnight. LOCAL PRODUCE : In season, a colourful local market every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday morning from 8 am till 1 pm.
